Hyderabad: The tenure of 120 municipalities and eight municipal corporations in Telangana has come to an end. Additionally, the term of the elected members of the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation will conclude on January 28. In this context, the Telangana government has issued orders appointing special officers to oversee the administration of these municipalities and corporations.

Elections for these urban local bodies were held in 2020, and with the five-year term ending, the Director of Municipal Administration has appointed special officers to take charge. The state currently has 142 municipalities, and the government recently announced the formation of 12 new municipalities during the Assembly session, bringing the total to 154.

In 2020, elections were conducted for 130 municipalities, whose governing bodies’ terms ended on January 26. The government intends to hold elections for these municipalities, along with the newly established 12 municipalities, by April.

Elections for 130 municipalities were held in 2020, while in 2021, elections were conducted for the GHMC, Greater Warangal, Khammam, Achampet, Kothur, Nakrekal, Siddipet, and Jadcherla municipalities. However, elections were not held for four municipalities, namely Palvancha, Manuguru, Mandamarri (located in the agency area), and Zaheerabad.
