Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have captured the historic and strategically significant Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, marking a major military development in the region. The operation was carried out by troops of Israel’s elite Golani Brigade, who reportedly engaged in intense fighting before securing complete control of the fortress.
Following the operation, Israeli soldiers hoisted national flags atop the castle, symbolizing the restoration of Israeli military control over one of the most important strategic positions in southern Lebanon.
The capture of Beaufort Castle is significant not only from a military standpoint but also for its historical symbolism. The development comes 44 years after the Golani Brigade first seized the fortress during the 1982 Lebanon War following fierce battles with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The castle remained under Israeli military control for nearly two decades before Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that the Israeli flag is once again flying over Beaufort Castle after a gap of more than two decades, describing the development as a major achievement for the country’s security establishment.
The operation gained additional significance as it came shortly after large-scale attacks launched against Israeli territory by Hamas. In response, the Israeli military reportedly implemented a comprehensive offensive strategy to secure the fortress.
According to reports, the operation began with an extensive aerial bombardment campaign targeting areas surrounding Beaufort Castle. Israeli warplanes carried out intensive airstrikes aimed at weakening enemy positions in and around the strategic site. The air campaign was followed by a carefully planned ground offensive, which ultimately resulted in Israeli forces gaining full control of the fortress.
Military officials consider Beaufort Castle one of the most strategically valuable locations in southern Lebanon due to its elevated position overlooking vast areas of southern Lebanon and northern Israel. The fortress serves as a natural observation point, providing extensive surveillance capabilities over surrounding territories and border regions.
Israeli military sources stated that securing the castle would strengthen monitoring and intelligence-gathering operations in the area while helping to neutralize rocket-launching infrastructure allegedly used to target Israeli territory. Officials indicated that maintaining surveillance over hostile activities along the northern frontier remains a key objective of ongoing military operations.
The capture of Beaufort Castle is expected to enhance Israel’s operational capabilities along its northern border and provide a significant strategic advantage in monitoring developments across southern Lebanon. The development also highlights the growing military activity in the region as tensions continue to rise amid the broader conflict in West Asia.
