US Defence Deal with Pakistan Sparks Strategic Ripples in South Asia

In a development that reflects the shifting dynamics of global diplomacy, recent international geopolitical tensions—particularly between Iran and the United States—are influencing strategic equations in South Asia. Pakistan’s emerging role as a diplomatic intermediary in these engagements has coincided with a significant defence-related decision by Washington, highlighting the intersection of diplomacy and military cooperation in the region.

The United States has approved Pakistan’s inclusion in a $488 million (approximately ₹4,000 crore) F-16 radar support contract. The agreement has been finalised between the US Air Force and defence contractor Northrop Grumman. It is aimed at providing technical and engineering assistance for Pakistan’s F-16 fleet, particularly for advanced radar systems such as APG-66 and APG-68, with support scheduled to continue until 2036.

This latest arrangement follows an earlier US approval in December 2025 of a $686 million upgrade package for Pakistan’s F-16 aircraft. That package included Link-16 communication systems, avionics upgrades, and pilot training support. Collectively, these developments indicate sustained American engagement in maintaining Pakistan’s existing fighter fleet under technical cooperation agreements.

Amid these developments, analysts suggest that Pakistan’s diplomatic positioning in the Iran–US tensions has strengthened its strategic relevance for Washington. While Pakistan has been viewed as a facilitator in regional dialogue, critics argue that such cooperation also aligns with broader US interests in maintaining influence across South Asia through defence partnerships.

India, however, has repeatedly expressed concerns over continued US military assistance to Pakistan, citing past instances where such platforms were allegedly used in operations against it, including the 2019 Balakot episode. Defence experts, meanwhile, argue that the upgraded F-16 fleet does not significantly alter the regional power balance, as India’s Rafale fighters and broader air capabilities remain technologically superior. Despite this, the agreement is expected to carry wider strategic implications for regional geopolitics involving India, Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan.
