China Strikes: Sanctions Hit America’s Key Defence Giants

China has imposed sanctions on 10 American defence-related companies, banning the export of dual-use civilian and military goods to these firms. Among those targeted are some of the most prominent names in the American defence industry, including Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. Beijing’s move comes directly in response to Washington’s recent decision to ban Chinese technology companies from participating in American defence contracts, signalling that this escalating standoff is no longer limited to trade and tariffs but has now entered the domain of military and strategic competition.

Going further, China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that Chinese state-owned enterprises will be prohibited from purchasing products from 46 American companies. Beijing has also banned the transfer of goods purchased from China to any of the sanctioned American firms through third-party countries, effectively closing what could have been a backdoor route around the restrictions. These measures follow Washington’s decision earlier this month to blacklist several major Chinese tech companies — including Alibaba and Baidu — from American military contracts, citing alleged ties to the Chinese military.

What makes this moment particularly significant is the diplomatic backdrop against which all of this is unfolding. Just last month in May, President Trump visited China and held talks with President Xi Jinping, where both leaders appeared to reach an understanding on mutual trade cooperation. The two sides left those meetings with what seemed like a renewed commitment to economic engagement. Yet within weeks of that summit, Washington moved to impose restrictions on Beijing-linked companies — a turnaround that caught many observers off guard and has now drawn a sharp and calculated response from China.

Beijing’s swift retaliation makes clear that it has no intention of absorbing American pressure without pushing back. What began as a trade war has steadily evolved into something far more consequential — a contest over technology, defence supply chains, and strategic dominance. With sanctions now flying in both directions and diplomatic goodwill evaporating almost as quickly as it is generated, the world’s two most powerful nations appear to be locked in a cycle of action and retaliation that shows no sign of slowing down.
