San Francisco/Hyderabad: OpenAI’s popular AI tool ChatGPT experienced a widespread outage on Tuesday, leaving users across several countries unable to access services or receive responses to their queries.
According to real-time monitoring platform DownDetector, the outage began around 3:00 PM IST, with a surge in user complaints reporting that ChatGPT was not responding to prompts. The highest number of disruptions were reported from India and the United States.
As per DownDetector data, approximately 800 complaints were filed, of which 88% involved issues with ChatGPT not providing answers, 8% related to the mobile app, and 3% reported problems with the API. Many users encountered a “network error” message when attempting to interact with the chatbot.
Users also took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), tagging ChatGPT and sharing screenshots of the issue.
Responding to the situation, OpenAI updated its system status page confirming that both ChatGPT and its text-to-video platform Sora were affected. The company acknowledged that some users were experiencing errors or delays in responses and assured that engineers were actively working to resolve the issue.
More updates are expected as OpenAI investigates the cause of the disruption and works towards full service restoration.
