India-Flagged Tanker Among Vessels Affected in Hormuz Strait Incident

Tensions escalated sharply in the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian forces reportedly opened fire on two commercial vessels passing through the strategic waterway on Saturday. Among the targeted ships was a supertanker carrying approximately 2 million barrels of Iraqi crude oil, triggering serious concerns over maritime security and the stability of global energy supply routes.

According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), two gunboats belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) engaged the vessels while they were navigating between the Qeshm and Larak islands. Although the incident caused panic among crew members, authorities confirmed that both ships and their personnel remained safe. Following the firing, several vessels, including an Indian-flagged tanker, altered course and retreated from the region.

In a separate development, Iranian state media reportedly announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing the United States’ failure to honour commitments made during ongoing negotiations. The announcement stated that no commercial or foreign vessels would be permitted to pass through the waterway until sanctions on Iranian ports are lifted, further intensifying geopolitical tensions in the region.

Iranian authorities also indicated stricter controls over maritime movement in the strait. Parliamentary Committee head Ebrahim Azizi said that all vessels would now require clearance from Iranian naval authorities and may be subject to toll payments. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader representative Mojtaba Khamenei warned of stronger retaliatory measures if external pressure continues.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20% of global oil trade flows, remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. The latest developments have raised alarm in international markets, with analysts warning of potential disruptions to oil supply chains. US President Donald Trump, reacting to the situation, cautioned that if a broader agreement is not reached before the ceasefire deadline on April 22, military action could resume, further heightening global uncertainty.
