Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has commenced efforts to provide new ration cards to the underprivileged who currently do not have them. The government has set the application period for new ration cards from December 2 to December 28, 2024. With ration cards being essential for accessing a range of government welfare schemes, thousands of citizens are waiting for their cards.
In addition to new applicants, individuals who had applied for ration cards during the previous government’s tenure but did not receive them are also seeking new cards. The government has decided to include applications submitted between January 1 and March 2024, and will review all applications to ensure that eligible individuals receive their cards. The government has announced plans to distribute the new cards as a special New Year gesture, alongside the distribution of updated cards to replace old ones.

The design for the new ration cards is being finalized, and the updated cards will feature QR codes and images of family members. New technologies will be incorporated into the cards to streamline the process, and they will be distributed free of charge. The existing ration cards, which currently feature the photo of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, will be fully replaced with the new design.

Additionally, the government is addressing issues concerning newlyweds. In cases where newly married individuals are not included in their family’s existing ration card, their names will be removed from the card, leading to some delays in issuance. To resolve this, the government has decided to issue new ration cards to newlywed couples based on their marriage registration documents. The government will also issue ration cards to individuals who have separated from their parents or are living independently.

The government is also addressing allegations that the previous administration issued ration cards to ineligible individuals. Reports indicate that eligible citizens were previously denied ration cards. The current administration is committed to ensuring that all deserving individuals receive their ration cards. To this end, village meetings will be held to review eligibility.
Applications for new ration cards will be accepted from December 2 to 28, 2024. After reviewing the applications from January to March 2025, the government aims to distribute the cards to eligible individuals by March.
