Spain is grappling with a devastating natural disaster as massive wildfires sweep through the Andalusia region in the country’s south, causing extensive loss of life and property. The blaze has claimed 11 lives so far, while another 19 people remain unaccounted for. Rescue operations to locate the missing have been intensified.

According to the latest information from the Andalusian regional government, the wildfire has severely impacted Almería province. The municipalities of Los Gallardos, Bédar, and Antas have been brought to a complete standstill by the flames. As fire rapidly advanced toward residential areas, around 600 local residents were forced to abandon their homes and belongings, becoming displaced overnight.

With the situation turning increasingly dangerous, authorities moved swiftly and relocated more than 120 people to safe areas overnight. Emergency evacuations were carried out particularly in the surrounding villages and outlying areas of Almócita, Fuente del Alberico, Los Pinos, La Serena, and Pinar, where the fire has been spreading most aggressively.

The government has set up temporary rehabilitation centers for those suddenly rendered homeless. Officials have arranged temporary shelter and meals for 74 displaced people at the Lubrín Theatre and another 74 at the Garrucha Theatre. Arrangements are underway to provide rehabilitation for the remaining displaced residents as well.

The ferocious wildfire has so far completely destroyed nearly 3,150 hectares of forest land. Adverse weather conditions, intense heat, and strong winds sweeping through the region have made it extremely difficult for firefighting personnel to bring the flames under control. To monitor the severity of the disaster and protect the forests, the government is implementing a special emergency strategic plan known as “Plan INFOCA.”

Andalusia’s Emergency Services Minister, Antonio Sanz Cabello, said that the threat remains ongoing as wind directions continue to change unpredictably, and that authorities are maintaining a high alert. Among those injured in the disaster, four people suffering from severe respiratory issues due to smoke inhalation and burn injuries have been shifted to the renowned Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville for advanced treatment. Four others received first aid at the site of the incident. The government has appealed to the public to strictly follow the safety directives issued by emergency departments.
