The rapid growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector has prompted several tech companies to announce strategic workforce changes. In this context, Google has offered voluntary retirement packages to employees who are not prepared to align with the company’s AI expansion plans. Employees opting for the program will receive a specially designed severance package.
The package will apply to select staff within Google’s Global Business Organization (GBO), which oversees advertising and revenue generation for the company’s products and services. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, recorded $400 billion in revenue in 2025. Google plans to significantly expand its AI services in 2026 and is encouraging employees to transition in line with these objectives, according to Chief Business Officer Philip Schindler. The program primarily targets customer sales teams and other customer-facing roles in the U.S.
Google is not alone in implementing such initiatives. Other tech giants, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, are also offering voluntary retirement packages to streamline their workforce. Microsoft, notably, has reportedly issued ultimatums to certain senior executives as part of its AI-focused restructuring strategy.
The move coincides with strong financial backing for Google’s AI ambitions. Alphabet’s recent bond issuance to raise funds for AI expansion received robust market support, raising approximately ₹2.9 lakh crore within 24 hours, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s AI-driven growth plans.
