Tehran Sets Three Conditions for Reopening Strait of Hormuz

The ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated into a potential global oil and gas crisis after Iran’s blockade of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz disrupted international shipping and energy supply routes. The move has heightened concerns over stability in global energy markets, given the strait’s critical role in worldwide crude oil transportation.

Iran, through mediators, has reportedly placed three key conditions before the United States for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as put forward by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The demands include the complete lifting of US sanctions on Iran’s oil exports and broader economy, which Tehran says have severely impacted its financial stability.

The second condition calls for a reduction in US and allied military presence in the Persian Gulf region, along with a clear assurance that Washington will not interfere in Iran’s internal affairs. Iran has maintained that regional security must be ensured without external military pressure or intervention.

The third demand focuses on Iran’s nuclear programme, seeking removal of restrictions and revival of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), under which Iran agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. Tehran has stated that the strait will remain closed unless these conditions are met.

The United States, however, has strongly opposed Iran’s proposals, with President Donald Trump and his national security team rejecting any deal that does not directly address Iran’s nuclear activities. US officials have reiterated that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons remains their top priority, and no agreement excluding the nuclear issue will be acceptable.

While the White House has not issued an official response to Iran’s latest conditions, internal sources indicate that Washington is preparing to take a tougher stance on Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme. With both sides maintaining rigid positions and refusing to make concessions, uncertainty continues over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of prolonged disruptions and volatility in global energy prices.
