New Delhi: Tech layoffs continue to grip the global technology sector as Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced another major round of job cuts. The move has raised concerns among tech professionals worldwide amid ongoing restructuring across major Silicon Valley firms.

The company confirmed that it will reduce nearly 10% of its global workforce, impacting around 8,000 employees. Meta’s Chief People Officer Janelle Gale reportedly communicated the decision through internal memos, informing staff that layoff notifications will be issued starting May 20 to both personal and work email accounts of affected employees.

Alongside the layoffs, Meta has also decided to eliminate approximately 6,000 open positions that were previously planned for future recruitment. The company stated that the restructuring is aimed at streamlining operations, cutting costs, and improving overall efficiency across business units.

Meta said the decision is part of its broader strategy to redirect investments towards artificial intelligence (AI). The company is focusing heavily on strengthening its AI capabilities to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving global tech landscape, where firms are aggressively expanding their AI-driven operations.

Meanwhile, analysts caution that the layoffs could deepen further, with projections suggesting the total job cuts may rise up to 20% in subsequent phases. Meta has announced severance packages for affected employees, including 16 weeks of base pay, additional compensation based on years of service, and 18 months of health insurance coverage, underscoring the scale of the restructuring.
