Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is likely to be reorganized into three separate municipal corporations as part of the Telangana government’s plan to improve administrative efficiency and support the city’s rapid expansion. The proposal envisages dividing the expanded GHMC area—now spread over 2,053 square kilometers, extending up to the Outer Ring Road—into Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and Cyberabad corporations. The number of divisions has already been increased from 150 to 300, with plans to allocate 100 divisions to each corporation, potentially paving the way for the election of three mayors.
The current GHMC governing council’s term ends on February 10 next year, after which the bifurcation process is expected to begin. Elections to the proposed corporations are likely in March or April; however, if polls are not conducted by July, they may be deferred until 2027, following the completion of the census and fresh delimitation based on updated population data. Recently, GHMC released a revised map featuring 12 zones, 60 circles, and 300 wards, incorporating five districts, 47 mandals, and 311 villages. Officials said the restructuring aligns with the government’s vision to develop Hyderabad into a world-class metropolitan city.

Under the proposed plan, the Hyderabad zone may include Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Charminar, and LB Nagar divisions; the Secunderabad zone is expected to comprise Secunderabad, Quthbullapur, Malkajgiri, and Uppal divisions; while the Cyberabad zone may include Serilingampally, Khairatabad, Golconda, and Kukatpally divisions. Several new circles are also proposed across key localities, including Ameenpur, Miyapur, Narsingi, Patancheru, Madhapur, Gachibowli region, Jubilee Hills, Mehdipatnam, Ameerpet, Attapur, Falaknuma, and Bahadurpura, among others.
