West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is under increasing scrutiny and opposition in connection with the murder of junior doctor Abhaya. Her response to the incident, which has stirred national outrage, has been widely criticized across the state. Opposition parties are vocally demanding her resignation, pointing to what they perceive as inadequate handling of the case and suppression of protestors.
The victim’s parents have also voiced their frustration with Banerjee’s actions. Abhaya’s father expressed his disillusionment, stating, “We have lost faith in Mamata Banerjee following the police’s mishandling of the investigation. We now see some effort from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), but our trust in the Chief Minister has been shattered. Despite widespread calls for justice for our daughter, her response has been dismissive. It feels like she is trying to silence those who are advocating for justice.”
In addition, Abhaya’s mother criticized the Mamata government’s Kanyashree and Lakshmi schemes, remarking, “Before availing these schemes, ensure that your Lakshmi is safe at home.”
