Guntur Government Hospital (GGH) is witnessing a surge in cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), with the number of affected individuals rising to seven within a day. Medical authorities confirmed that while one case was identified in the morning, six additional cases were reported by the afternoon.
Among the patients, two are in critical condition—one is on a ventilator, and another is receiving treatment in the ICU. Five others were admitted to the general ward, and two of them have been discharged following treatment.
Principal Secretary of the Medical and Health Department, Krishna Babu, visited GGH to assess the situation and reviewed the preparedness of the neurology ward. He emphasized that GBS is not a new disease, with typically one or two cases occurring per 100,000 people. A higher number of cases have also been reported in Pune.
Authorities are examining potential causes beyond common infections and have assured that the situation is under control. They urged the public not to panic, highlighting that 10 to 12 cases per month are within the expected range. Officials also stressed the importance of maintaining sanitation and avoiding misinformation.
Immunoglobulin injections are being made available, and the government is actively monitoring the situation, collecting data from both government and private hospitals to ensure effective response measures.
