COVID-19 cases are currently rising again in Andhra Pradesh. It is also known that four people have recently died after contracting coronavirus. With COVID cases being recorded again after nearly six years, people are growing concerned. Against this backdrop of rising cases, the government has launched a vaccination program. This has raised several doubts among many people. Let’s look at whether the COVID-19 vaccine administered in 2021-2022 can provide protection against the new variant emerging in 2026, or whether a separate vaccine is being administered for the new COVID-19 variant.
The Omicron variant RF.5 has been identified in the country. This coronavirus was recorded in some individuals in Andhra Pradesh, and testing was carried out at a virology lab in Pune. This testing detected the Omicron RF.5 variant. However, experts say there is no need to fear this virus. RF.5 belongs to the Omicron family. RF.5 is similar to previously identified Omicron variants. Therefore, they said there is no major need to be afraid of this new variant. However, they noted that this RF.5 variant is not new, but rather a combination of two different variants. This new variant, RF.5, emerged independently. It was stated that RF.5 originated from the coronavirus’s JN.1 variant, along with LF.7 and PY.1.1.1.
RF.5 is a sub-variant belonging to the COVID-19 Omicron strain. There is still no clarity on whether this virus is severe or not. However, experts are warning that while there is no major need to fear this virus, failing to take precautions would be risky. Experts say that precautions must definitely be taken even for a minor cold.
Will the old vaccine work?
When COVID-19 first emerged, the government had administered Covaxin and Covishield vaccines to people as a precautionary measure, with some people receiving two doses along with a booster dose. Experts say that those who took two doses along with a booster dose will benefit from this new vaccine. Getting vaccinated does not mean one will not contract COVID at all. Doctors have stated that it increases immunity and reduces the likelihood of contracting the coronavirus.
How to avoid getting COVID?
To avoid contracting the coronavirus, hands should always be kept clean. Similarly, a mask should be worn when stepping out of the house. Wear a mask before leaving home. Avoid going to crowded places. Use sanitizer. Everything should be kept clean. Experts recommend consuming nutritious food.
