The Revanth Reddy-led government in Telangana is contemplating the reintroduction of the Village Revenue Officer (VRO) system, which was abolished by the previous BRS government. The previous administration had dismantled the system due to concerns about widespread corruption and issues with land records, reassigning nearly 12,000 employees in these positions to other departments.

However, the current government is planning to reinstate the system and appoint a VRO for each revenue village in the state. With 10,909 villages in Telangana, this move is expected to bring back the VRO role to ensure better management of revenue-related tasks.

The reintroduction of the VRO system is part of broader changes in the Panchayat Raj Act, which will include the recruitment of approximately 8,000 new employees. In total, the government plans to appoint nearly 11,000 VROs. Those who were appointed through the Public Service Commission in the past will be directly assigned responsibilities, while 3,000 individuals will be recruited from various government departments. Additionally, the government plans to conduct recruitment exams to hire another 8,000 VROs.

The recruitment process will prioritize candidates with intermediate or degree-level education, particularly those who previously served as VROs or VRAs. These individuals will undergo an examination based on revenue services and related issues, with appointments being made based on merit.

To avoid legal complications during the recruitment process, the government is taking proactive measures under the guidance of Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.

Further clarifications are awaited regarding the specific responsibilities that will be assigned to the new VROs, as they were traditionally responsible for issuing various revenue-related documents and handling land record transfers. The government is expected to provide clarity on the powers and functions of the newly reinstated VROs in the coming months.
