New Delhi: Delhi Police have ordered a 24-hour suspension of mobile internet services around the Janpath-Kartavya Path intersection ahead of a protest planned for Saturday by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The suspension covers a four-kilometre radius and takes effect at 10 pm on Friday, October 9, remaining in force until 10 pm on Saturday.
The order was issued by the office of the Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police to major telecom operators, including Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, Jio and MTNL. It directs them to immediately shut down mobile internet services across all technologies. Police said the Union Home Secretary had approved the request under the Telecommunications Act, 2023.
The decision came just hours after the Supreme Court questioned the government’s measures to curb the protest, including restrictions on metro and train services entering Delhi. The court asked whether a hammer could be used to kill a fly. Police sources said the internet suspension was ordered solely to maintain law and order in view of the CJP demonstration.
