A series of violent incidents has sparked concern in Canada, where three individuals of Indian origin were killed within a span of a week. The back-to-back killings have raised alarm among the Indian diaspora and prompted calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
On March 14, 22-year-old Birinder Singh was shot dead while sitting in his vehicle in Alberta. According to eyewitness accounts, a pickup truck approached his car and the occupants opened fire. Birinder, who was behind the wheel, was fatally hit by a bullet and died on the spot, triggering shock and grief among his acquaintances.
A day earlier, on March 13, Devinder Singh (31) was killed in North Battleford. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, though further details regarding the motive and suspects have not yet been disclosed.
In a separate incident on the same day, Gurkirit Singh Manocha (31) lost his life following a violent altercation near Fort St. John. Manocha, who had travelled there to pursue a management degree, reportedly got into a dispute with an unidentified individual near Charlie Lake boat camp late at night. He sustained critical injuries and died before police could reach the scene.
Originally from Ujjain, Manocha’s death has added to growing concerns within the Indian-origin community in Canada. While one of the incidents is suspected to have a possible racial angle, authorities have not confirmed any such motive. Investigations are ongoing in all three cases, even as fear and outrage continue to spread among residents.
