Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Friday directed power department officials to ensure that all electric infrastructure in the proposed “Future City” is placed underground. Emphasizing the need for aesthetic and modern urban planning, the CM stated that no electric towers, poles, or overhead lines should be visible in the area. High-tension lines passing through the region must also be relocated, he said.

During a high-level review meeting with electricity department officials, the Chief Minister called for the experimental installation of smart poles in Greater Hyderabad. He suggested starting with key locations such as the Secretariat, Necklace Road, and KBR Park. Officials were also instructed to prepare a detailed plan for generating solar power along the 160-kilometre Outer Ring Road (ORR).

Officials informed the Chief Minister that the state’s peak electricity demand had reached 17,162 megawatts this year, a 9.8% increase compared to the previous year. Projections estimate the demand will rise to 18,138 MW by 2025–26 and further to 31,808 MW by 2034–35.

In light of these trends, the CM stressed the need for a strategic power supply plan for the next three years, especially considering upcoming flagship infrastructure and irrigation projects. He directed officials to include electricity needs for railway lines, metro expansions, and other mass transportation systems.

Further, the Chief Minister asked that power requirements of corporations beyond GHMC, upcoming data centers, and industrial clusters be integrated into planning. Highlighting Hyderabad’s potential to emerge as a major data center hub, Revanth Reddy confirmed plans to establish a dedicated “Data City.”

He also directed coordination with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to assess and plan for the electricity needs of radial roads and satellite townships within the Regional Ring Road zone.

To support increasing demand, CM Revanth Reddy urged the department to upgrade existing substations and modernize power lines. He also asked officials to explore possibilities for solar power generation along footpaths and drainage channels within the GHMC limits.
