Police have foiled a major terror plot in the Punjab and Chandigarh region. Three suspects were taken into custody from behind the Sector-43 bus stand in Chandigarh, with police recovering a suspicious IED, a weapon, and other material from the area during the operation.
Those arrested have been identified as Lovepreet Singh (19), Jashanpreet Singh alias Jashandeep (21), and Prabhpreet Singh alias Prabh (19). Police have identified all three as suspected terrorists linked to the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). Of those detained, two belong to Tarn Taran and one to Amritsar. Officials said around 5 kilograms of gelatin sticks, weapons, and components used to make IEDs were recovered from them.
The three, who were behaving suspiciously near the Sector 43 bus stand in Chandigarh, were taken into custody and questioned, revealing links to Pakistan-based Khalistani terrorist Satnam Satta. Preliminary investigation has found that they had recently plotted a terror attack in Punjab and Chandigarh.
Police said the three accused were apprehended through a special operation carried out based on precise intelligence inputs regarding the movements of BKI operatives in Chandigarh. Following the recovery, an FIR was registered at Police Station 36, and investigating agencies are thoroughly examining the recovered items. Officials said security in the area has been further tightened in light of the development, and that they are analysing the nature of the seized IED and the origins of the other materials recovered.
Police stated that there is no need for the public to panic, and that all necessary precautionary measures are being taken to ensure public safety. They said a full-scale investigation is currently underway and that further details would be shared soon.
