In a strategic move, YSRCP Chief and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced former minister Botsa Satyanarayana as the party’s candidate for the MLC seat representing the local bodies in the combined Visakhapatnam district. This decision follows consultations with key party leaders regarding the candidate selection.
The MLC by-election is scheduled for August 30, with the nomination process set to close by August 13. The electoral college for this by-election includes 841 votes, comprising ex-officio members. In the previous voting, YSRCP secured 615 votes, while the TDP received 215 votes. There are currently 11 vacancies to be filled.
The by-election was triggered after Vamsi Krishna Yadav, who was elected as an MLC on a YSRCP ticket, joined the Jana Sena party and was subsequently disqualified following a complaint from the YSRCP. The Election Commission has issued a new notification for the by-election.
From the YSRCP, former ministers Gudivada Amarnath and Budi Muthyala Naidu are also in the fray. Jhansi, the wife of Botsa Satyanarayana, contested the Lok Sabha elections but lost. Following a meeting with local leaders, Jagan decided to field Botsa Satyanarayana, who is regarded as a formidable leader in Uttarandhra.
The TDP is preparing to challenge the YSRCP’s candidate, with speculation suggesting that former MLA Gandi Babji may be the alliance’s choice for the MLC seat. An official announcement regarding this potential candidate is yet to be made.
