Hyderabad: Telangana has been grappling with a series of police suicides, which have become a topic of grave concern. Recent incidents, including the suicides of a sub-inspector, a female constable, and a computer operator, have sparked widespread debate. Addressing the issue, Telangana DGP Jitender Reddy highlighted that such incidents occur annually due to factors like financial troubles, personal difficulties, family disputes, and workplace stress. The DGP emphasized that family counseling sessions are being conducted to provide support to police personnel.
Crime Report Highlights
During the release of the 2024 annual crime report, the DGP presented alarming statistics. Telangana witnessed a 9.87% rise in registered cases compared to the previous year. The state seized drugs worth ₹142.95 crore and arrested 4,682 individuals involved in narcotics-related offenses. Cybercrime cases surged to 33,618, with ₹180 crore recovered and returned to victims.
The report also detailed the registration of 703 thefts, 58 dacoities, 1,525 kidnappings, 856 murders, and 2,945 sexual assault cases. Additionally, the Dial-100 helpline received a staggering 16,92,173 complaints this year.
New Initiatives and Legal Action
Telangana has become the first state to implement digital FIR registration, recording 85,190 cases under new legal provisions. Authorities have taken stringent action against illegal private agencies and blocked 1,800 fraudulent websites.
The police department has also strengthened social media monitoring, launching investigations under “Cybercrime Investigation” to curb online offenses. Training programs have been introduced to equip police personnel with the skills needed to enforce new laws effectively.
The DGP reaffirmed the department’s commitment to achieving a drug-free Telangana and ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens through proactive measures.
