The Telangana government has clarified that no cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in the state amidst rising concerns about the virus spreading in China. The state health authorities urged the public not to panic and stated that the symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of COVID-19. They also issued key health guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus:
1. Regularly sanitize hands.
2. Use handkerchiefs or tissues when coughing or sneezing.
3. Maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated.
4. Stay at home if feeling unwell.
5. Avoid physical contact with others.
6. Do not reuse tissues or handkerchiefs.
7. Avoid spitting in public.
8. Consult a doctor before taking any medication.
9. Avoid crowded places.

While China has witnessed an increase in HMPV cases, the Chinese government has responded to claims of hospital overcrowding by denying that the virus is the cause. They stated that the severity of respiratory diseases this winter is lower than last year. Additionally, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reassured that it remains safe for foreign nationals to visit the country.
