Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy highlighted the evolution of the state’s rice distribution schemes, noting that the Congress government had earlier launched the “Rupee per kilogram of rice” scheme under Vijayabhaskar Reddy. However, it did not reach the public effectively. The scheme gained wider traction during N.T. Rama Rao’s tenure, receiving positive responses from citizens. For decades, coarse rice was distributed, but over time, either its consumption declined or mafias converted it into finer varieties, limiting the benefits to the poor.
Recognizing these challenges, the government decided to provide fine rice that the poor could actually consume. Revanth Reddy revealed that the fine rice scheme was initiated with this objective. Farmers were incentivized with ₹500 per quintal to cultivate fine rice, ensuring adequate supply for distribution to beneficiaries.
Currently, the scheme benefits approximately 3.39 crore people, accounting for 86% of Telangana’s population. Officials expect this reach could expand to 90% in the near future. Ration cards were issued to all eligible applicants, ensuring that no household is left out. The scheme has not only supported farmers but also addressed hunger among economically weaker sections.
The distribution of fine rice has also curbed black-market activities related to rice. According to Revanth Reddy, continuous monitoring by the Civil Supplies Ministry and departmental staff has been instrumental in the scheme’s success. Today marks one year since the launch of fine rice distribution across the state.
Looking ahead, the government plans to focus on quality education and nutritious food for students. Farmers are also being encouraged to diversify crops, including commercial varieties, under crop diversification policies. Revanth Reddy emphasized that the scheme is part of a broader initiative to strengthen food security while supporting agricultural growth in Telangana.
