New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday described the caste census as a challenging but essential task and lauded the Telangana government for successfully undertaking it. Speaking at a presentation organised by the Telangana government in New Delhi, Rahul commended Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and state Congress leaders for exceeding expectations in implementing the survey. He stated that the caste census conducted in Telangana could serve as a model for the entire nation.
Rahul emphasised the need to remove the 50% cap on reservations and reiterated his demand for a nationwide caste census. “This survey will act as a guiding framework for the country,” he noted.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, addressing the same event, took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that he does not possess genuine concern for the welfare of Backward Classes (BCs). Revanth credited Rahul Gandhi’s persistent efforts for forcing the Centre to accept the importance of caste-based enumeration. He stated that Telangana’s comprehensive survey has generated 88 crore pages of data covering social, economic, caste, and political aspects.
Highlighting Rahul Gandhi’s commitment, Revanth recalled that the promise of caste enumeration was made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra after listening to the people’s demands. He said the exercise marked a historic development nearly a century after the last caste-based census.
The Chief Minister added that all communities, including upper castes, were engaged in the process and that all findings were explained transparently. “Only under Congress leadership can such progressive steps take shape,” he asserted.
Revanth also revealed that UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi had written him a letter of appreciation for his efforts in implementing the caste census. “To me, that letter is equivalent to receiving an Oscar, a Nobel Prize, and a Lifetime Achievement Award,” he said.
