New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asserted that all water flowing through the Indus river system within Indian territory rightfully belongs to the country and will be used exclusively for national interests. This marks his first public statement on the matter following India’s withdrawal from the Indus Waters Treaty.
“India’s rivers belong to India. Earlier, water meant for our people flowed out of the country. That will no longer be the case,” the Prime Minister said. “The waters of India will now stay in India and will be used solely to meet the needs of our citizens.”

Modi emphasized that utilizing national resources for domestic benefit is a sovereign right, signaling a more assertive approach to water-sharing policies in the wake of ongoing regional tensions.
Addressing the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Prime Minister reiterated his government’s zero-tolerance policy on terrorism. “Those involved in the Pahalgam attack, and anyone who supported them, will not be spared,” he declared. “Our armed forces have been given full freedom to act, and the government stands firmly behind any steps they take.”
