Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have intensified in recent days, with both sides engaging in cross-border exchanges. Amid the escalating situation, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stirred controversy by claiming that Islamabad is prepared to fight a two-front war against both India and Afghanistan.
In an interview with a local television channel, Asif said Pakistan “cannot rule out” border tensions with India and is “ready for simultaneous conflict” on both fronts. He added that strategies are in place for such a scenario but declined to elaborate further. Asif also alleged that Afghan refugees living in Pakistan were involved in terror-related activities and said action was being taken to identify and deport illegal migrants.
The remarks come as clashes along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border have resulted in casualties on both sides. Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of launching attacks while its foreign minister was in New Delhi, alleging that the strikes were carried out under India’s influence. Asif further accused Afghanistan of waging an “indirect war” against Pakistan with India’s support.
Responding sharply, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the statement, asserting that Pakistan continues to harbor and support terrorist organizations. “It is Pakistan’s habit to blame others for its internal failures. Afghanistan is fighting for its sovereignty and territorial integrity, which appears to frustrate Pakistan,” the MEA said.
The exchange has further strained regional relations, with India reiterating its support for Afghanistan’s efforts to counter terrorism.
