Lok Sabha Speaker’s Decisions Shake Up Maharashtra, West Bengal Politics

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has taken two major decisions that have sent shockwaves through Maharashtra and West Bengal politics. The Lok Sabha has officially approved the merger of six rebel MPs from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) into the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. With the Speaker reviewing and approving this merger application, Maharashtra’s political equations have shifted dramatically, with the national capital as the venue for this change.

With this development, the strength of Uddhav Thackeray’s faction in the Lok Sabha has dropped to just three MPs, while Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena strength has risen to 13 MPs. As a result, the numerical strength of the ruling BJP-led NDA alliance in Parliament has grown further. On the other hand, this has emerged as a major setback for the opposition INDIA alliance in the Lok Sabha. Adding to this, factions of the NCP belonging to Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar in Maharashtra are also reportedly holding talks toward a merger, and are said to be considering extending support to the NDA — raising the prospect that the Congress and Uddhav’s faction could find themselves isolated in the state.

In another significant development, West Bengal’s ruling party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has also suffered a major shock in the Lok Sabha. Twenty breakaway TMC MPs have already merged into the “Nationalist Citizens’ Party of India,” and Speaker Om Birla has allowed them to be allotted separate seats in Parliament. The Speaker’s office has given the green light to these MPs’ request to be recognized as a separate group and permitted to sit apart.

These simultaneous rebellions and merger processes within regional powers — Shiv Sena (UBT) and Trinamool Congress — have become a major talking point in national politics. Political analysts believe that, beyond weakening the opposition’s strength in the Lok Sabha, these new equations are likely to have a significant impact on parliamentary voting and bill approvals in the days ahead.
