Kolkata: The gang-rape of a law student at a Kolkata college has triggered nationwide outrage, as a recently released medical report confirms brutal sexual assault. Police have arrested three accused, including a youth leader from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and two other students. The incident reportedly occurred inside the college union room, where the victim was confined and assaulted overnight.
The medical report, following an examination conducted on Friday, confirmed multiple external injuries, including bruises around the neck, sharp lacerations on the chest, and signs of forced sexual contact. Doctors also noted severe trauma to the victim’s private parts, suggesting the use of extreme physical violence.
The accused—identified as Manojit Mishra, Jaib Ahmad, and Prameed—were presented in court on Thursday and remanded to five days of police custody. Investigators believe Manojit, who had been allegedly pressuring the victim to marry him, conspired with his associates to commit the assault after she rejected his proposal. The suspects reportedly filmed the crime and threatened to release the video on social media if the victim spoke out. Despite her pleas to be taken to a hospital, the accused denied her medical attention.
The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of the case. Protests have erupted across the city, with demonstrators demanding capital punishment for the accused. The case has intensified calls for immediate justice and stricter campus safety regulations.
