Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi president and MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Wednesday accused the Congress-led state government of targeting former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) with politically motivated notices over the Kaleshwaram project. Addressing a massive protest in Hyderabad organised by Telangana Jagruthi, Kavitha alleged that the government was acting in the interest of commissions and contractors.

She questioned the rationale behind issuing notices to KCR while no action was taken against Megha Krishna Reddy, whose firm constructed nearly 90% of the pump houses in the project. “Issuing notices to KCR is equivalent to targeting the entire state of Telangana,” she said, demanding immediate restoration works at Medigadda barrage and resumption of irrigation through Kaleshwaram.

Kavitha described the Kaleshwaram project as a monumental engineering feat, comprising 21 pump houses, 15 reservoirs, 200 km of tunnels, and nearly 1,500 km of canals. “The earth used could build 300 pyramids, the steel could raise 100 Eiffel Towers, and the concrete could construct 50 Burj Khalifas,” she stated, adding that the project was designed to provide water to over 40 lakh acres and ensure a permanent drinking water supply to Hyderabad.

She further warned that halting the project could turn 35% of Telangana’s land into a desert. Criticising Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Kavitha questioned his silence on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s plans to divert 200 TMC of Godavari water to Banakacherla. She demanded that the Chief Minister write to the Centre, seeking to designate Tupakulagudem as the linkage point for the Godavari-Penna project and immediately halt the Banakacherla plans.

Kavitha also took aim at the BJP, accusing it of betraying Telangana by remaining silent. She said only BJP leader Eatala Rajender could be considered a true son of Telangana and urged him to speak out. “Don’t let the silence for political gain tarnish your legacy,” she warned.

Stating that the time had come to assert Telangana’s rights, Kavitha declared that Telangana Jagruthi would take up a state-wide agitation if the Congress and BJP failed to act. “We will continue our fight until Telangana secures its rightful 1,000 TMC share of Godavari water,” she said.
