The Indian Army has taken a major step to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities by issuing a tender for the procurement of six AK-630 air-defence guns under the “Mission Sudarshan Chakra” initiative. These 30mm multi-barrel mobile air-defence systems are to be acquired from the state-owned Advanced Weapons & Equipment India Limited. The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day, aims to establish an integrated, multi-layer Kavach defence system by 2035 to safeguard critical areas along the nation’s borders.

The decision follows insights from “Operation Sindoor,” during which Pakistani forces targeted civilians and religious institutions in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab. Recognising the need for robust air-defence capabilities along strategic locations on the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC), the Indian Army has prioritised the deployment of advanced systems to counter aerial threats effectively.
The AK-630 gun systems are designed to counter UAVs, rockets, artillery, and mortar fire. Each system is mounted on a trailer that can be towed by high-mobility vehicles, with an effective range of up to 4 km and a firing capacity of approximately 3,000 rounds per minute. Equipped with electro-optical fire-control systems, these guns can identify and engage targets accurately in all weather conditions, enhancing India’s defensive posture along sensitive border regions.
