The Indian Air Force (IAF) has created fresh history by climbing to third place on the list of the world’s most powerful independent air forces. In the global ratings released by the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA), an international ratings agency, India achieved a True Value Rating (TvR) score of 69.4. However, when all categories of military aviation worldwide — including army, navy, and marine aviation wings — are taken into account together, the Indian Air Force stands at sixth position overall. Notably, in this global ranking, India has surpassed its neighbor China.
The IAF secured this remarkable achievement while asserting its dominance on the world stage. By being ranked as the third most powerful air force globally, India has once again showcased its prestige internationally. It was on the strength of its outstanding score of 69.4 in the global ratings that India secured a better position than China. The development has injected fresh enthusiasm into India’s military defense sector.
In these ratings, the Chinese Air Force received a score of only 63.8, restricting it to fourth place. The rankings make clear that simply having a larger number of fighter aircraft is not sufficient to gauge an air force’s true strength. Instead, the results demonstrate that factors such as how modern an air force is, the balance within the force, and how swiftly it can respond during wartime are the real benchmarks of genuine military power.
This global ranking was compiled using a specialized global valuation system. Rather than considering only the number of fighter aircraft, the system also factored in elements such as the level of modern technology deployed and the proper maintenance of aircraft. Alongside these, high priority was given to logistical support, pilot training, and the overall strategic balance of the air force.
The Indian Air Force currently possesses a highly efficient force comprising state-of-the-art fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, and helicopters. This has made it easier for the IAF to maintain its aircraft effectively, provide efficient training to pilots, and respond swiftly during emergency situations. The force continues to play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s borders.
Over the past several years, India has inducted new fighter aircraft and advanced helicopters into the force while continuously upgrading older aircraft as well. It is this comprehensive strategy that India has been pursuing which is making the air force increasingly powerful, serving as a key driving force in taking the nation’s aerial defense capabilities to new heights.
In this global list, the United States Air Force (USAF) topped the world with a maximum score of 242.9, retaining its position as the number one air force globally. The United States possesses all categories of state-of-the-art aircraft in the right proportions, and its sheer number of aircraft is also significantly higher than others. Notably, the majority of aircraft used by the US are built using its own indigenous technology.
The current list released by WDMMA covers 103 countries worldwide. It includes not only primary air forces but also the aviation wings belonging to the army, navy, and marine corps divisions of various nations. In total, the rankings were finalized after reviewing the performance and capability of 48 categories of military aircraft across 129 military aviation services.
