Hyderabad: The upcoming Metro extension to Shamshabad Airport is set to introduce several unique features, marking a significant development in the city’s transit infrastructure. Unlike the entirely elevated routes constructed during the first phase, the new airport corridor will incorporate a combination of elevated, at-grade, and underground sections, according to the comprehensive project report.
In the second phase, the existing Metro line from Raidurgam to Nagole will be extended by 33.1 km, covering key areas including LB Nagar, Chandrayangutta, Mailardevpally, Jalpally, P7 Road, and ultimately, Shamshabad Airport. Of this extension, 21.4 km from Nagole to Lakshmiguda will be elevated, while the 5.28 km stretch from Lakshmiguda to the P7 Road at the airport boundary will be constructed at-grade.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had previously suggested exploring the feasibility of an at-grade construction to optimize costs, given the wide divider space available on the road. Following a basic study, this recommendation was incorporated into the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
A key highlight of the project is the 6.42 km underground Metro line from the airport compound boundary to the terminal, marking the city’s first underground Metro route. This section will feature three stations – Cargo, Terminal, and Aerocity. Additionally, a depot is proposed to be constructed in this area, further enhancing the project’s infrastructure.
