The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a historic victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the 15-year-long rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). With this landmark mandate, political focus has now shifted to the crucial question of who will lead the new government as Chief Minister. As per tradition, the BJP contested the election without announcing a Chief Ministerial face, but its decisive majority has now triggered intense deliberations within the party leadership.

The BJP high command is actively engaged in consultations to finalise the next Chief Minister, with the swearing-in ceremony reportedly scheduled for May 9, coinciding with Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti. Political activity has intensified between Delhi and Kolkata as senior leaders evaluate potential candidates who can lead the state administration effectively while maintaining the party’s organisational strength.

Among the frontrunners, Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as a strong contender. His political influence gained prominence after defeating Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by a margin of 15,000 votes. Having also won from Nandigram, Adhikari is seen as a leader with strong grassroots connect and electoral credibility. His repeated electoral success against Mamata Banerjee has strengthened his position within the party, making him one of the top choices for the Chief Minister’s post.

Another key contender is West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya. Known for his organisational skills and deep understanding of Bengali culture, Bhattacharya has played a significant role in strengthening the party’s base in the state. His close association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and ability to integrate different factions within the party have added weight to his claim for the top post.

In addition, spiritual leader Uttapal Brahmachari (Uttapal Maharaj) has also emerged as a surprise contender, drawing comparisons to leadership models in other states. Meanwhile, intellectuals like Swapan Dasgupta and economist Sanjeev Sanyal are also reportedly under consideration. With RSS expected to play a crucial role in the final decision, the BJP legislative party meeting, likely to be held in the presence of senior leaders including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, will be decisive in determining Bengal’s next Chief Minister, a decision being closely watched across the country.
