The Revanth Reddy-led government in Hyderabad is set to empower the Hyderabad Development Regulatory Authority (HYDRA) further in its efforts to demolish illegal constructions built on lakes and drains. During a recent cabinet meeting, the council decided to grant legal status to HYDRA, and a significant development has occurred regarding this legal recognition.
Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan has given the green light for the legislation establishing HYDRA’s legality, signing an ordinance issued by the Telangana government today. With the governor’s approval, the state government has issued a gazette notification. As a result, HYDRA will acquire additional powers and operate more assertively moving forward. The government plans to introduce a bill regarding HYDRA’s legal status in the upcoming assembly sessions.
Expansion of HYDRA’s Jurisdiction
The Revanth Reddy government also plans to expand HYDRA’s authority beyond Hyderabad to encompass the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). Reports indicate that the government intends to divide the area into three zones and assign responsibilities to SP-level officers.
Preparations are underway to designate the Central Zone as the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate, the North Zone as Cyberabad, and the South Zone as Rachakonda. The state government has initiated actions to appoint zonal officials and full-time staff. The Chief Commissioner will oversee these three zones. The legal framework to empower HYDRA, established through a special GO two months ago, is currently under review by the legal department, with an official announcement expected soon.
