Hyderabad: The Telangana government has expanded its subsidized meal initiative in Greater Hyderabad by introducing millet-based breakfast at the city’s ₹5 meal centres, which will now be rebranded as Indira Canteens. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) announced that the upgraded canteens will offer both breakfast and lunch, replacing the earlier model that only served mid-day meals.

The breakfast menu, prepared in coordination with the Hare Krishna Foundation, focuses on nutritious and millet-rich items such as millet idlis, upma, pongal, and puri with curry, served on a six-day rotating schedule. Each meal costs Rs 19, with the state subsidizing Rs 14 and collecting only Rs 5 from the public. GHMC plans to establish 139 new container-based canteens across the city with an investment of Rs 11.43 crore. The initiative emphasizes hygiene, nutritional value, and accessibility, with every canteen offering seated dining facilities to ensure dignity and comfort for beneficiaries.
