New Delhi : Even as China continues diplomatic talks with India, it is simultaneously escalating military tensions along the border. Fresh satellite imagery has revealed that China has deployed as many as 11 J-20 Mighty Dragon fifth-generation stealth fighter jets at two key airbases near the Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh borders. According to commercially available satellite imagery, this marks the largest concentration of J-20 aircraft ever observed at Chinese airbases facing India.
Seven J-20 jets were spotted at Hotan Airbase in Xinjiang, while four more J-20s appeared at Damxung Airbase in Tibet’s Lhasa Prefecture. The Hotan base lies about 389 kilometers northeast of Leh in Ladakh, and just 245 kilometers from India’s strategically vital Daulat Beg Oldie airbase. Damxung Airbase is located roughly 344 kilometers northwest of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. This proximity significantly reduces the response time available to the Indian Air Force in the event of an emergency.
Former Indian Air Force fighter pilot and NewSpace co-founder Sameer Joshi said the deployment does not appear to be a temporary military signal, but rather suggests that the Chinese Air Force has normalized fifth-generation fighter operations from high-altitude airbases near India. The Indian Air Force has not officially commented on the reported deployment so far.
What Are the J-20’s Technical Capabilities?
The J-20 is a fifth-generation stealth fighter developed indigenously by China. Its stealth technology makes it difficult for conventional radar systems to detect. It is capable of covertly penetrating enemy airspace to carry out strikes. The aircraft is equipped with advanced AESA radars and PL-15 air-to-air missiles capable of striking targets more than 200 kilometers away.
While the Indian Air Force currently operates powerful fighters such as the Rafale, Sukhoi-30MKI, and Mirage-2000, all of these belong to the 4.5 generation. India does not currently possess any fifth-generation fighter aircraft. China had only about 50 J-20s in 2019; that number rose to 200 by 2022. Estimates suggest the fleet could grow to between 300 and 500 aircraft by 2026, with China aiming to field as many as 1,000 J-20s by 2030.
India is indigenously developing its first fifth-generation stealth fighter, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. However, it is expected to take at least a decade for the aircraft to complete full-scale testing and enter service with the Indian Air Force.
India’s Defensive Preparedness
While China’s actions pose a significant challenge to India, the country does possess certain defense systems capable of countering them. The S-400 air defense systems procured from Russia are stationed along the border and are capable of detecting and neutralizing even stealth aircraft. Similarly, the Spectra electronic warfare system and Meteor missiles fitted on India’s Rafale jets are expected to play a key role in countering J-20s, according to defense experts.
Analysts note that this deployment does not signal an imminent military confrontation, but it does make clear that China is establishing a persistent fifth-generation air presence along the Line of Actual Control. Building matching preparedness is likely to become a critical priority for India in the period ahead.
