Beijing/New Delhi: A surge in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is causing widespread hospitalizations in China, sparking concerns about the virus’s rapid spread. The HMPV infection, which impacts individuals across all age groups, primarily causes respiratory complications, with symptoms including breathing difficulties and lung inflammation.
Chinese authorities are taking measures to contain the virus’s spread. However, India’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has clarified that there is no need for panic in the country. DGHS Director Dr. Atul Goel assured that the situation in China does not pose an immediate threat to India.

“Human Metapneumovirus is similar to other respiratory viruses that cause common colds and flu. While it can affect both children and adults, it is not a cause for alarm,” Dr. Goel stated. He emphasized that such infections are common during winter and advised the public to follow standard respiratory hygiene practices.
Dr. Goel highlighted the importance of isolating individuals with cough or cold symptoms to prevent the virus from spreading. “People with symptoms should avoid meeting others and use personal towels to minimize transmission risks,” he advised.

He further suggested that individuals with symptoms like fever, cough, or cold should take appropriate medications and avoid unnecessary exposure. “The current situation in India does not warrant any panic. Simple precautions can help prevent respiratory infections,” Dr. Goel added.
The DGHS also reiterated that maintaining personal hygiene, wearing masks in crowded places, and seeking timely medical attention for respiratory symptoms are effective preventive measures.
