Big Political Twist in Telangana: Kavitha Floats New Party “TRS”

A significant political development has unfolded in Telangana with Kalvakuntla Kavitha announcing a new political party named “Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS)”, creating ripples across the state’s political landscape. The announcement marks a major shift in regional politics and is being closely watched by political observers as a move that could alter existing equations.

Ahead of the announcement, there was widespread speculation regarding the party name, with several possibilities such as Telangana Praja Jagruthi, Telangana Vikasa Samithi, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, and Telangana Praja Vikas Samithi being discussed in political circles. Kavitha, however, maintained suspense until the final stage, keeping the naming process under wraps.

The new party was formally unveiled at a massive public meeting held at Advaya Convention in Muneerabad, Medchal–Malkajgiri district. Kavitha announced “Telangana Rashtra Sena” as the party name, which has drawn immediate attention due to its acronym TRS, previously associated with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi founded by then Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao.

Political analysts note that after the original TRS was renamed as Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), a perceived emotional vacuum developed among sections of Telangana supporters. Kavitha’s decision to retain the TRS acronym is being viewed as a strategic attempt to revive that sentiment and reconnect with the statehood movement legacy.

The move is also seen in the backdrop of internal developments within the BRS, including the growing influence of leaders such as K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao, and a reported decline in space for Kavitha’s supporters. Following her suspension from the BRS in September 2025, Kavitha has been actively engaging in grassroots outreach through her “Jagruthi Janam Bata” programme.

Political observers suggest that the formation of Telangana Rashtra Sena could have a significant impact on the BRS vote base, potentially leading to fragmentation of support in upcoming elections. With Kavitha positioning herself around Telangana sentiment, women voters, and grassroots mobilisation, the development is expected to intensify political competition in the state, setting the stage for a more complex electoral battle ahead.
