Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed officials to draft an action plan aimed at bolstering reservations for backward classes (BCs) in upcoming local body elections. The directive came during a high-level meeting convened at Sachivalayam on Monday to deliberate on proposed increases in BC reservations and related matters.

During the meeting, officials were tasked with providing a timeline for the impending panchayat elections contingent upon the state’s forthcoming caste census. The Chief Minister emphasized the urgency of preparing a comprehensive plan promptly to ensure continuity of central government funds to local bodies alongside the proposed increase in BC reservations.

Former Minister Jana Reddy provided insights into the historical policies governing panchayat elections, from the erstwhile unified state to current practices in Telangana. Discussions also encompassed Supreme Court precedents on BC reservations in local body elections across states, highlighting legal rulings and their implications.

Revanth Reddy instructed officials to compile a detailed report outlining the state’s current reservation policies systematically. He proposed seeking inputs from Panchayati Raj Department experts, former officials, and legal consultations with the Advocate General. The Chief Minister underscored that a final decision would be made before the Legislative Assembly session following a thorough review of policies from other states.
