New Delhi: The Centre has announced the schedule for the long-awaited national census, with the official enumeration set to begin across the country on January 25 next year. The Registrar General of India has issued a gazette notification to this effect.

Self-enumeration from January 10
Between January 10 and January 24, residents can submit their household details online, through the designated portal or app, without waiting for an enumerator to visit.

House-to-house survey
From January 25 to February 28, enumerators will go door to door to collect detailed information on the ground. March 1, 2027 has been fixed as the reference date for the census. Residents who need to update or correct their data can do so between March 1 and March 5.

For now, states where assembly elections are due shortly and high-altitude areas with extreme snowfall have been kept out of this schedule. The census will not be conducted in this phase in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, nor in the heavily snow-affected regions of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. In all other states and Union Territories, the exercise will continue until February 28.
