A controversy over the use of artificial intelligence has surfaced in US politics. Allegations that President Donald Trump is extensively using Elon Musk’s AI chatbot “Grok” in official White House decisions and policy formulation have caused a stir in political circles. There is widespread talk that Trump consulted the chatbot before the military operation to arrest Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Against this backdrop, senior Democratic leaders, including Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, have written an official letter to the White House. They demanded that records of all conversations, queries and responses between President Trump and his staff and AI tools such as ChatGPT and Grok during official duties be preserved. They made clear that these digital records must not be erased or destroyed under any circumstances.
Reports said Trump asked Grok how the public would react if Maduro were removed from office and arrested. Grok reportedly replied that Maduro was a dictator and that Venezuelans would celebrate his removal. Democratic lawmakers are now investigating whether the US government took international policy or military decisions based on opinions or advice from an AI chatbot.
The Democrats have asked the White House to submit a full report on the matter by 5 pm on November 11. White House sources said all records legally required to be preserved in the presidential office are being kept securely in accordance with the rules.
Although the Defence Department has already announced some guidelines on the use of AI in government work, serious concerns remain over the involvement of private AI chatbots in key matters of national security and foreign affairs.
