A major political development has unfolded in Karnataka with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigning from his post amid intense political discussions and signals reportedly received from the Congress high command over the past few days. The senior Congress leader submitted his resignation letter to the Governor through the Raj Bhavan Secretariat, formally ending his tenure as Chief Minister. Siddaramaiah stated that he expects the Governor to accept his resignation shortly.
Addressing the media after submitting his resignation, Siddaramaiah clarified that the decision was taken in accordance with the directions of the Congress leadership. He stated that he has always remained committed to the instructions of the party high command and therefore resigned while adhering to party discipline and constitutional procedures. Siddaramaiah said he stepped down to facilitate the appointment of a new Chief Minister and asserted that the transition was being carried out voluntarily.
The outgoing Chief Minister also dismissed speculation regarding any instability in the state government. He emphasized that the Congress government continues to enjoy a comfortable majority in the Karnataka Assembly and maintained that there is no threat to the government’s survival. According to Siddaramaiah, the leadership change should not be viewed as a crisis but as an internal decision taken by the party leadership.
During his media interaction, Siddaramaiah turned emotional while reflecting on his political journey. He recalled rising through the ranks from the grassroots level and expressed gratitude to the people of Karnataka, Congress party workers, and all those who supported him throughout his political career. He thanked the people of the state for giving him the opportunity to serve as Chief Minister and described the position as one of the greatest responsibilities of his public life.
Following Siddaramaiah’s resignation, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is expected to take oath as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka. Political observers noted that after the Congress party’s victory in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, there was intense competition between Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar for the top post. The latest development has now reignited discussions over the power-sharing arrangement reportedly worked out by the Congress high command at the time of government formation.
Political circles are debating whether Siddaramaiah’s resignation is part of the previously agreed power-sharing formula or whether additional political considerations influenced the leadership transition. The Congress leadership, however, has so far maintained that the government remains united and stable despite the change in leadership.
