The Bharatiya Janata Party has intensified its efforts to expand its presence in South India, setting its sights on the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026. As part of this strategy, the party on Friday released its first list of 27 candidates. Among the names is former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, a known political rival of K. Chandrashekar Rao.
Tamilisai Soundararajan was appointed as the second Governor of Telangana—and the first woman to hold the post—on September 8, 2019. She resigned in March 2024 following escalating differences with the state government. During her tenure, frequent confrontations arose between her and the KCR-led administration over issues such as bill approvals, MLC appointments, and protocol-related matters.
The strained ties between the Governor and the state government often played out publicly. Tamilisai held multiple press conferences alleging that the government was undermining her position, while leaders from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi strongly refuted her claims and criticized her conduct. The ongoing friction kept the Governor–government relationship under constant political scrutiny.
Before assuming the gubernatorial role, Tamilisai had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu on a BJP ticket but lost to Kanimozhi Karunanidhi of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. She is now set to contest the 2026 Assembly elections from the Mylapore constituency, marking her return to active electoral politics.
The BJP’s candidate list also features several key leaders. Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran will contest from Sattur, while Union Minister L. Murugan will enter the fray from Avinashi. BJP Mahila Morcha national president Vanathi Srinivasan has been fielded from Coimbatore (North), along with other candidates including Krithika Sivakumar, S. Vijayadharani, and Nagesh Kumar.
Meanwhile, the absence of former state BJP chief K. Annamalai from the list has triggered speculation within political circles. Reports suggest dissatisfaction over seat-sharing arrangements in the alliance, though the party has yet to issue an official clarification. The BJP is contesting in alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam under the NDA framework. With the ruling DMK alliance, the AIADMK-BJP combine, and actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam entering the fray, the election is shaping up to be a keen three-cornered contest. Polling is scheduled for April 23, with results to be declared on May 4.
