Islamabad: Pakistan is witnessing widespread protests amid rumours surrounding the health and possible death of former Prime Minister and cricketer Imran Khan, who has been lodged in Adiala Jail. Family members have not been allowed to meet him for several weeks, and authorities have reportedly blocked phone communication as well. Police allegedly used force on his sisters when they attempted to visit him.

Despite the growing speculation, the Pakistan government maintains that Imran Khan is in good health. Army Chief General Asif Munir has also stated that there is “no concern” regarding his condition. However, Imran Khan has not been presented publicly, further intensifying suspicion and anger among supporters.

Workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged large-scale demonstrations across the country on Tuesday. In Rawalpindi, PTI supporters gathered outside Adiala Jail demanding proof of Khan’s well-being. PTI leader Asad Qaiser accused the government of violating court directives and prison regulations by blocking access to Khan and withholding information.

To curb the protests, the government imposed Section 144 in Rawalpindi, banning rallies and public gatherings for two days. The district intelligence committee reported that certain groups were attempting to disrupt law and order.

Imran Khan’s son, Qasim Khan, earlier expressed concern alleging that his father has been kept in a “death cell” for the past six weeks and has not been shown to the family for 845 days. He appealed to prison authorities and the Pakistan government to provide evidence that his father is alive and safe, and urged international intervention in ensuring transparency.
