Pakistan is witnessing renewed political unrest as tensions escalate between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government and the country’s powerful military establishment. The conflict revolves around the tenure of Army Chief General Asim Munir. While the government maintains that Munir’s term has already been extended until 2027 and does not require a new order, the army chief is reportedly seeking an additional five-year extension up to 2030. Intelligence sources suggest the dispute extends beyond tenure, reflecting a deeper battle over political influence and institutional control.
The ruling Pakistan Muslim League (N) fears that granting Munir a prolonged tenure would allow the military to assert greater authority over the civilian administration. According to reports, Munir has gained significant backing from Qatar and other foreign allies, who are attempting to mediate and prevent the situation from spiraling into a full-blown power crisis. Within the military ranks, Munir reportedly enjoys strong internal support, having strategically promoted officers loyal to his leadership.
Complicating matters further, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is believed to be exerting indirect pressure on the government. Sources indicate that ISI operatives have influenced the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) group to stage protests highlighting the government’s shortcomings. A corruption petition filed against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif—allegedly instigated by the ISI—has further fueled tensions. As the standoff deepens, analysts warn that Pakistan’s fragile political balance could face fresh instability, with growing uncertainty over the military’s expanding role in governance.
