Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has won a sensational victory in the Michigan Senate election, one of the most closely watched races in American politics. He defeated Republican Mike Rogers by a margin of more than 127,000 votes, becoming the first Muslim senator in US history. El-Sayed received 1,872,595 votes (50.74%), while Rogers received 1,745,183 votes (47.29%). Decision Desk HQ also confirmed the result, and Democrats have retained the seat of retiring Senator Gary Peters.

Analysts view the result as more than an ordinary election win, calling it a strong answer from voters to remarks by Donald Trump. During the campaign, President Trump directly accused El-Sayed of being a “jihadi” and a supporter of terrorists, and said he should pass through a metal detector before entering the US Congress. The Arab-American community and several political leaders strongly condemned the comments, but voters rejected the criticism and delivered a decisive win to El-Sayed.

El-Sayed, 42, has family roots in Egypt and was born in Rochester Hills, Michigan. A physician by training, he worked in public health before entering politics, serving as a government official in the health departments of Detroit and Wayne County. He ran for Michigan governor in 2018 but lost in the primaries. This time, he won over voters with a “Medicare for All” platform promising government-funded healthcare. He also called for removing corporate financial influence from politics and openly opposed unconditional US military aid to Israel.

Michigan is a crucial swing state in American politics, and its Dearborn area has a large Arab-American and Muslim population, where Eid is recognized as a public holiday and mosques and Arabic-language signs are common. By fielding a Muslim candidate and winning, the Democratic Party has given prominence to progressive politics. Political circles believe the victory will strengthen progressive ideology and public health policies in Democrats’ strategies for the 2028 presidential election. With the Trump camp suffering setbacks in both the Senate and the House, El-Sayed’s win is seen as the start of a new era in the US Congress.
