Iran Exempts Indian Ships From Hormuz Strait Restrictions Amid West Asia Tensions

Amid rising tensions and sanctions in West Asia, Iran has announced a special exemption for Indian ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the heart of global trade. The relief also covers commercial vessels from its allies China, Iraq and Qatar. The announcement was made officially by Amir Hayat, Deputy Chairman of Iran’s Foreign Policy Committee.

Strict restrictions on general shipping are currently in force in the Strait of Hormuz. Hayat made it clear, however, that vessels from the four countries will face no restrictions. He said their cargo ships can move freely without obstacles, and that even the United States cannot stop them. He added that the usual transit fee will still be collected from ships using the route.

Iran said the exemptions carry a clear diplomatic and economic strategy. The main aim, it said, is to ease the supply of life-saving medicines from India to West Asian countries. Given the global reputation of India’s pharmaceutical sector, the decision was taken to ensure that imports of essential drugs are not disrupted.

Securing political support from China on international platforms and maintaining good relations with regional partners are also seen as strong reasons behind the move. With the Strait of Hormuz serving as a key lifeline for global oil transport, the relief for Indian ships is expected to bring significant benefits to domestic exporters and the shipping sector.
