Trump’s Trade Advisor Flags India’s Russian Oil Imports, Tariffs Imposed

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on Indian imports, citing India’s purchase of Russian oil as contributing to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The tariffs are set to take effect from August 27. So far, there has been no formal negotiation between U.S. and Indian officials, and Trump has shown little inclination to discuss the matter. Senior American officials have also publicly criticized India, including Trump’s trade advisor Peter Navarro, who called India a “partner to the Kremlin.”

Navarro stated that he does not expect the U.S. to extend the tariff deadline. He alleged that India imports Russian oil not out of necessity but to gain profits, noting that India’s imports rose from 1% before Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine to 35% today. He further claimed that India’s actions undermine efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict and accused New Delhi of expanding trade with both Russia and China while ignoring U.S. concerns.

India Strengthens Trade Ties with Russia and China
India is reportedly coordinating with Russia and China to counteract the impact of U.S. tariffs. Over the past two days, Indian ministers have held discussions with officials from both countries. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is currently visiting Russia, while Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is on an official visit to India. Agreements are being negotiated to facilitate the export of Indian goods to both countries, which have reportedly agreed to continue trade regardless of U.S. tariffs.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis confirmed that oil shipments to India will continue and added that coal for power generation and steel production will also be supplied. Russia will continue importing Indian-made products, while China has pledged to welcome “Make in India” goods into its market. Additionally, cross-border trade with Nepal via the Lipulekh pass will resume under agreements between India, Russia, and China.
