Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Mehbooba Mufti, has called on the central government to adopt a targeted strategy in its response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. She cautioned against the practice of collective punishment, which includes mass arrests and demolitions of homes, stating that such actions could inadvertently strengthen terrorist groups.
Mufti stressed the need to differentiate between terrorists and innocent civilians, stating, “The central government must proceed with caution. It’s essential to clearly distinguish between terrorists and civilians. We must not target those who oppose terrorism, especially innocent individuals.”
The PDP leader raised concerns over reports suggesting the demolition of both militant and civilian properties, alongside the widespread arrests of individuals. She argued that these actions would only punish the innocent and not address the root causes of terrorism. “Evidence-based actions should be taken against terrorists, while civilians must be treated with respect,” she added.
Mufti further emphasized the importance of human rights protection in security operations, urging security forces to focus on operations that safeguard civilians’ rights. She warned that indiscriminate actions could erode public trust and fuel terrorist propaganda. “Justice and trust are critical in the fight against terrorism,” Mufti concluded.
